Bob Segall/13 Investigates Millions of credit cards now have a built-in device designed to make them more convenient. But is it also making your credit cards more vulnerable to fraud? 13 Investigates shows how credit card information can be stolen from your wallet while it’s still inside your pocket. Identity Stronghold is the leading provider of RFID security sleeves and badge holders to the US government, and offers a full line of consumer products from card and badge holders, to purses and wallets. Identity Stronghold recognized the need for privacy protection for RFID chipped items and created a new industry in RFID shielding protection in 2005. Identity Stronghold products are approved by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to effectively prevent reading of contactless smartcards and passports.

This is a simple example of how you can use mbed (mbed.org) to get a microcontroller talking to the internet. Donatien talks you through the hardware and software he used to get an RFID tag to trigger a tweet. Of course, this is just one example; what the microcontroller is looking for, and the web service it talks to is pretty flexible, so the basic approach could be used for many internet connected ideas. All the details are at mbed.org Check it out and get inventing! For more details and the full code and writeup, see mbed.org.

Chameleon is a platform for tracking and managing consumer transactions. Each consumer is assigned a unique identifier, contained in an RFID chip. Participating stores are equipped with RFID machines that, through radio frequency transmissions, can instantly extract the consumer identity from the chip. At the time of transaction, the consumer identifies himself using his RFID chip, and transaction data are instantly transferred to a database, where data is organized for both consumer and retailer. The service could be in principle sold to any retailer. However the penetration strategy would be to initially target stores that the same customer visits very frequently, as supermarkets, or stores that sell items which often need to be returned, as electronics and household products. For instance, Currys and Argos. Chameleon would give retailers the possibility to reduce the time spent in processing transactions and hence to increase revenues. Also, retailers would lower the costs of receipt issue and printing, increase reliability of customer information during returns and refunds of purchases, improve CSR by decreasing paper consumption. Chameleon would give consumers a simple way to recording and manage their receipts, which would be very useful both for managing household expenses and for returning products with warranties.

nwoo.org Hitachi Develops World’s Smallest RFID Chip thefutureofthings.com Kongresman Ron Paul sa na videoodkaze pod názvom “Campaign For Liberty” pýta, prečo – napriek prezidentovým snahám dosiahnuť, aby sa verejnosť dala zaočkovať proti prasacej chrípke – prezident Barack Obama nedovolil, aby proti nej zaočkovali jeho dcéry. Hoci v piatok vyhlásil celoštátnu pohotovosť v súvislosti s chrípkou H1N1, on osobne ju očividne nepovažuje za hrozbu do tej miery, aby nechal proti nej zaočkovať vlastné dcéry.
